Blogger´s Quilt Festival Fall 2012 - Like mother like daughter

 Welcome everybody over from Amy´s site, and welcome of course to my regular visitors. Once again it is festival time, and I´d like to share with you something I´ve made. 

This time it is actually two quilts, two real cheapy quickies - blocks sewn in one day for each quilt, blocks put together for both quilts in one day, both quilts sandwiched in one day, binding for each one one day, quilting for each in one day (though to be honest, one isn´t finished yet because I haven´t made my mind up yet about the quilting pattern).

And cheap? Oh yes! I have always loved Amy Butler fabrics but never had a clue as to what to do with them. I admired quilts that used them but they are just so - well, I guess not me, neither the patterns nor the colours, but I just love their opulence. So, when I ran into a pack of three jelly rolls, 99 strips in all, in a factory outlet, for a mere 13 Euros, I bought them. The same outlet provided me with the quilt backs, 8 Euros each. For a long time I did not know what to do with them and spent a lot of time surfing the internet. I knew that I did not want to buy extra fabric. I found this tutorial, and it was perfect for the fabrics. And what´s more, my daughter liked the result (even though there were flowers and girly colours - not her thing at all). 

I made two versions of the quilt, one totally without planning, one a bit more organized. Anjie´s quilt has a flannel back, and she asked me not to do too much quilting, because of the cuddliness factor.

Learn something new

 Am ersten September geht jedes Jahr Learn something new every day bei Shimelle an den Start. Letztes Jahr habe ich zum ersten Mal teilgenommen. Ich hatte so viel Spaß, und vor allem am Ende des Monats ein fertiges Minialbum (und das, obwohl für mich der Weg das Ziel ist), dass ich dieses Jahr auf jeden Fall wieder teilnehme. Im Moment bin ich noch ein bisschen hin- und hergerissen, ob ich wieder auf die bewährte Form des letzten Jahres zurückgreifen soll (schlichte Karteikarten, distressed und beklebt und ganz am Ende mit den größten Buchringen, die ich finden konnte, zusammengefasst), oder ob ich ein Album aus lauter Umschlägen gestalte. Klar ist, dass meine kleine Scrapsbox wieder zum Einsatz kommt, all die hübschen Papierschnipsel, die ich übers letzte Jahr gesammelt habe, weil die Schwäbin ja nix wegschmeißen kann, sei es Stoff oder Papier.

As every year Learn something new every day starts on the first of September at Shimelle´s. Last year I participated for the first time, and I had so much fun (and a finished mini album) that I am really looking forward to this year. All that is left to decide is the form of the album - will I use distressed index cards like I did last year, or maybe build an envelope album? I do know that I will use only stuff from my scraps box in which I collect all the pretty pieces of paper that are leftovers from projects over the year. Plus paint, fabric, ribbons - whatever comes my way and looks promising.

Wo ich mich erde / Where I find peace

 Nach einem August, der mir viel zu warm war (ja, ich bin ein Sommermuffel, und extra für mich sollte man das Wort Estivation in die deutsche Sprache einführen - im Englischen existiert es bereits und bedeutet Übersommerung), melde ich mich zurück mit einem virtuellen Spaziergang auf meinen Hausberg, den ich sicherlich fünfzigmal im Jahr besteige, weil es dort einfach so schön ist. 

After a much too hot August I am back with a virtual walk up my "house mountain" - a walk that I do at least once a week just because it is so beautiful.

 Er sieht nicht besonders hoch aus, aber es geht ziemlich steil begauf - ein echter Konditionstest!

Might not look like much, but it is pretty steep and a real test on your fitness.

Ungefähr 200 m von meiner Haustür entfernt liegt der Einstieg. Natürlich handelt es sich bei der Wacholderheide nicht um ursprüngliche Natur, aber für baden-württembergische Verhältnisse ist es doch beinahe Wildnis.

About 200 m from my doorstep you get to the entrance of that nature reserve. Of course it isn´t primal by any means, but for the south of Germany it is nevertheless pretty wild . 

Das ganze Jahr über kann man hier seltene Pflanzen finden. Im Frühjahr gibt es Unmengen von Orchideen, Knaben- und Händelkraut, Waldhyazinthen, Frauenschuh, Pyramidenorchis und Großes Zweiblatt sind zum Beispiel welche, die ich dieses Jahr bewundern durfte. Jetzt im Moment blühen drei verschiedene Enzianarten, der Deutsche Enzian, der Fransenenzian und sogar der Frühlingsenzian, der auch, auf schwäbisch, Schusternägele genannt wird und in warmen Jahren im Herbst nochmals erscheinen kann. Es gibt, neben den verschiedenen etwas vulgäreren Distelarten, auch Golddisteln und vor allem herrliche Silberdisteln, von denen ich gar nicht genug Photos machen kann. Sie blühen zum Teil in wahren Horsten, aber ich finde die Solitäre schöner, da klaut nicht die eine der anderen die Schau. 

The whole year over there are rare plants to admire. In spring you can see many kinds of orchids, and at the moment there are three different kinds of gentians. My favourites are the thistles, though, the carline thistle and the silver thistle. The silver thistles sometimes flower in big groups but I rather photograph them as solitaires because they are so spectacularly beautiful.

 Ganz neu entdeckt habe ich dieses Jahr das Sumpfherzblatt (Parnassia palustris). Das kannte ich vorher nicht - kein Wunder, es ist recht klein und gut getarnt und ebenfalls recht selten.

A new discovery this year is this lovely little flower, a bog star, or parnassia palustris. It is quite small and well hidden, so I am not amazed I haven´t noticed it before. Pretty though, isn´t it?

 Auch die Bergaster ist sehr selten, sagt mein Was blüht denn da? und behauptet darüber hinaus, dieses Blümlein würde in Rudeln vorkommen.

The Michaelmas daisy is also quite rare but on my mountain you can see a lot of them.

Allerdings bin ich nicht so elitär, dass ich mich nicht auch an Hagebutten, Schlehen, Wacholder, Weißdorn und Waldrebe erfreuen kann. Die Farben, die Formen und dass sie da sind (und mir versprechen, dass die Temperaturen auch wieder sinken werden), lassen mein Herz lachen.

But... I am not too elitist not to appreciate rosehips, sloes, juniper, hawthorn or clematis. I love the colours, the forms, and the promise that eventually the temperature will go down.

Scrapping the music Germany Challenge # 82 - Für immer jung

Bushido und Karel Gott klingt wie eine echt bizarre Mischung, aber der Song "Für immer jung", den das STMG-Team dieses Mal für seine Challenge ausgesucht hat, ist ein Ohrwurm, seitdem ich ihn zum ersten Mal gehört habe.

 Dieses Layout ist für Anjie, zur Erinnerung an ihren Papa, der am Sonntag mit nur 45 Jahren gestorben ist. Wir haben ihn seit fast sieben Jahren nicht mehr gesehen, sind aber trotzdem sehr traurig.
